Education is a fundamental human right according to the United Nations; however, sixty million girls worldwide are denied an education, and millions more receive an inferior education as compared to boys. The reasons for the lack of education for women are sexist cultural norms, poverty, poor health, and safety issues. The lack of education effects economic advancement, health and family planning, and the uneducated women’s children and their education. The benefits to educating women are profound for the individual, and to local and global societies. A girl’s education is the “best investment for reducing poverty, improving health, and ensuring social well being” according to the United Nations Educational Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and there are efforts being made to improve this social crisis.
If a woman is uneducated, their options and rights for equal employment, political participation, financial independence, and informed family planning are extremely limited or non-existent. Internationally, women continue to be exploited and caught in poverty with their children’s lives compromised as well. Uneducated women are more likely to live in poverty, be infected with HIV/AIDS, or die in childbirth. Their children are also more likely to die of malnutrition.
Women with an education are more likely to be employed, and therefore able to support themselves and their children independently. When women are productive in a workplace, it contributes to the economy and society. Therefore, an effort toward educating women effects future generations and the global community. It has been found that educated women are more likely to engage in protected sex, therefore avoiding the spread of AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases. This also helps avoid unwanted pregnancies and contributes to a decline in infant mortality. Additionally, educated women are far more likely to send their children to school, continuing the positive effects.
There have been conferences and summits by international groups in efforts to achieve universal primary education. Some progress has been made, but not enough. Further goals include eliminating child labor, supporting gender responsive schools that allow pregnant girls to continue their education, producing relevant educational content, providing gender sensitive curricula, training more female teachers, building schools accessible to girls’ homes, and making schools safe for girls.
There are many organizations supports women and girls around the world to improve their lives, including many projects that help women and girls seek an education. These volunteer organizations of businesses and professional women contribute time and financial support on local and international levels.

Why We Educate At Home, a discussion of the Classical Education Method

The Smithsonian Institution’s recipe for genius and leadership:
(1) children should spend a great deal of time with loving, educationally minded parents;
(2) children should be allowed a lot of free exploration; and
(3) children should have little to no association with peers outside of family and relatives. --H. McCurdy
My husband and I have no qualms about our style of parenting, which is so tied up in home education. He grew up beside his father in a greenhouse. Our first apartment at 500 sq ft, had 31 houseplants in it. He now works as a landscape designer. So we understand this analogy: Children are like little plants. You take the seed and put it in a little cup of the best topsoil. You give it lots of light. You gently sprinkle it with drops of water so the delicate leaves aren't broken. When it gets a decent root system, you transplant it to a bigger pot. You protect it from the wind and the hottest sun. You bring it in when there's a freeze. You don't put it out where the dog will trample it or a deer will eat the buds. When its well-established, and the season is right, you can transplant it finally to its place outside your home. Then it will do well on its own in the downpours and coldest winters.
So we plan to raise our children, protecting them and ensuring they are firmly established before they go out into the world. It is our hope that they do much better at surviving their relationships and careers with such a secure beginning. Our family follows the Classical Education model. I use the book, "The Well-Trained Mind" as the base for our curriculum. The basic premise of the classical method is the breakdown of education into three sections which each build on each other. First is the Grammar stage, generally 1st-4th grades, in which a child's curiosity is encouraged by just stuffing them full of images and facts. The next stage is the Logic stage, generally 5th- 8th grades, where an adolescent begins to find the answers to the how and why of what they learned in the Grammar stage. Last is the Rhetoric stage, in which 9th -12th graders learn how to coherently express what they have learned. In Classical Education, all learning follows history as its base and the other subjects work around it. In addition, a student goes over the same material three times in his education (cycling through the material once in each stage). An example of this is our reading material. Ideally, it should be exciting to entrance and interest the first grader, in-depth for the questioning fifth grader, and even more interesting and in depth for the ninth grader. In our home, I buy books on a fifth grade level to read to our first grader, and when we cycle back to the same material in the fifth grade, they read it for themselves, and in ninth grade they read source material. For example, I read The Trojan War and the 12 Labors of Hercules to my first grader. All of my children were enthralled. There were no pictures except those that streamed through their imaginations. Then, when we return to ancient history in the fifth grade, she will curl up on the couch and read about Hercules on her own. This time she'll learn that mom edited out the reason why he was assigned the 12 tasks: he killed his wife and children in a drunken rage. Then, when she returns again to the ancients in the ninth grade, she won't be intimidated by reading Homer's Illiad itself in the poetic original version. What's to be afraid of, when you're already familiar with the times and places? Also, when she was taught astronomy in the second grade, she already knew the story behind the crab-shaped constellation, from last year when she saw Hercules toss him into the sky in her mind's eye.
I was looking at a book from a series aimed at second-graders, called Junie B. Jones. It is listed on reading lists for this age group- yet it has sentences starting with conjunctions and fragments on every page. It has adjectives like bestest. It frequently says me and her. On a whim I looked up classical literature for this age group. I found rough breakdowns of classical literature by grade level. One example was The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. The first five sentences in The Velveteen Rabbit had an average of 29.2 words in each sentence. The first five sentences of Junie B. Jones and her Big Fat Mouth had an average of 5.4 words per sentence.
An example of one of the more complex sentences which I found in JBJ & her Big Fat Mouth was "Eating things that you find on the ground is very, very dangerous." I gave it another try and found "That's because I had tingling excitement in me about Job Day." In addition to using more complex sentence structure, Williams does not pare down her vocabulary to meet the child reader. Look how this sentence from The Velveteen Rabbit teaches the meaning of the word superior: "The mechanical toys were very superior, and looked down upon every one else; they were full of modern ideas, and pretended they were real." JBJ is so full of incorrect grammar and simple sentences because it is written from the point of view of a modern first-grader, who would actually speak like that (unfortunately) and have simple interactions. However, there are quite a few older books, written in a different time, from the point of view of a five-year-old (Heidi, Little House series). They are also more complex and descriptive and are much preferred to modern books written for our young people.

The Benefits of a College Education

When it comes to college, many young people feel as though they do not need it in order to make a good living. As the young people grow and become adults, it is soon realized that not having a college education was not such a great idea.
Those with a college degree are far likely to be hired for any position out there, before someone without a degree.
In fact, someone without a degree but ten years of hands oo experience is often times passed up on for someone with no hands on experience but a college degree under their belt.
Because of that fact alone it is vital to make sure that you obtain a college degree. Whether you are seventeen years old or forty years old now is the time in your life to begin thinking about improving your education.
You are never too young or too old to think about college as you have a lot of life to live and you want to be able to make the most of it. But besides the money aspect of the whole college issue, there are other reasons to earn a college education.
Those with a college degree under their belt, no matter what it was that they specialized in, are treated with more respect in the community. While that is a sad thing to say and some people are not likely to believe it, it is true.
People will take what you have to say more seriously if you are college educated. Even though there are incredibly smart and talented people all over the place without a college education, they are not given the opportunities that someone with a degree gets. Fair or unfair, this is the way that the world works.
You will also gain a lot of life experience by attending college. Besides all of the stuff that you will learn from the books, you will learn a lot during your years in college.
Interaction with authority and your peers is a big part of it. It is a nice way to taste the "real world" without having to pay the mortgages that go along with it. Of course, if you are an adult returning to school you will still have that mortgage but there is still a lot to be learned in terms of life experiences.
College is without a doubt a time in your life that you will not regret or soon forget. Even though it may be a little stressful and maybe even a little scary, your future, your happiness, and your over all well being depend on you making the right decisions about your education.
It is time to act now. The sooner you get up and get started the sooner it will all be done and over with. Once you are finished you can put all of that knowledge to good use and start earning the wages that your time is truly worth.

However, there is currently no evidence suggesting that television (televisores) watching affects children`s performance in school in a negative manner. In fact, modern research has found that there is a positive correlation between television viewing of 10 hours per week and sustained academic results.
Television (televisores) can be a very useful academic tool, and has been used in the classroom for academic purposes since the 1970`s. The television programmes are used to assist children in various subject areas, and are used alongside other teaching materials, to give a well rounded approach to learning materials. This has proved successful as children prefer learning visually at a young age. In the past, few programmes were designed for this purpose. However, with the extent of research that has gone into children`s television (televisores) and the input of governing bodies such as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission, this attitude has changed.
Research into the effects of television (televisores) on children`s behaviour and performance has been in place since the 1950`s. However, with the formation of the Action for Children`s Television society in 1970, the research has been extensive and covering a variety of areas. The importance of the content of children`s television has created governing bodies on each television network to make sure they are fulfilling their public responsibility. The research is weighted against product demand, current issues and education, and aims to make sure that all characters are good role models. This includes removing stereotyping and encouraging social tolerance.

It states that reruns are useful as they create recognisable characters and situations which help children to learn about cause and effect, sequencing and also improve their understanding of people and the world around them. Children`s television programmes are repeated up to four times a year to maximise the potential, though of course, this also assists with costs.

The economies the world over are changing into knowledge based economies. The changing face of technology the world over requires an individual to be specialized in a particular skill. Only a person who is expert in a particular field can get a good job. Vocational education training institutes impart specialized and practical knowledge to a person and help them become independent at a particular age.

Alternatives to Education Meltdown

Starting your life at school and going on through education is a learning experience for most of us, but we don't want to hear about you. Here in England we only want to talk about people at the extremes, the brightest at one end and the dumbest at the other. Why? Can't we have a debate about education where we begin to mention the majority, for once?
Why is it that education is never geared towards the majority?
Does that sound harsh? Well, that's certainly the impression you would get if you listened to the latest debate about education in England. Check your daily newspaper right now, and you'll see it concerns our Conservative Party's reluctance to endorse the idea of building new Grammar Schools. I know all about them, all right. At the tender age of 11 I was thrown into the '11-Plus' Exam that we had in Britain at the time. For some reason, maybe more good luck than judgement, I did well. That allowed me into one of the top Grammar Schools in my city, where I stayed for the next 7 years. Later, my mother proudly told me, 'Son, you managed to get into the top 2 per cent in the test'.
Hey, that's great, but how can you build an education system around the needs of the top 2 per cent? That leaves – how many? – out in the cold. Yes, 98 per cent. Damn, that's a lot of people, most of them directed towards a pretty second-rate schooling in what were then called 'Secondary Modern Schools'. They were 'Secondary', because that's schools for the 11 to 16 year olds, and they were 'Modern' because they got re-designed in the 1950s to meet the new needs of industry and commerce. They didn't last long. In the 1960s a new government came along, the Labour Party, and they promptly invented 'Comprehensive' schools, that is, schools that cater for everyone, at all levels.
Confused? You should be. While all this was going on, the real top dogs, the people who grew, went to school and ended up running the country, ignored the topsy-turvy policies and carried on doing what they always have done - going to what we Brits call 'Public Schools', (what the rest of the world might think of as private schools). Don't know what they are? Think about the film 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and just take it for granted that all those posh speaking men in the movie would have been educated in English Public Schools. That will give you some idea.

Yes folks, the Labour government said 'Let there be Comprehensives' in the 1960s, then forgot to abolish the Grammar Schools, so they carried on. The Comprehensive Schools spread out into every parish and town, and Secondary Moderns disappeared, mainly by turning from the latter into the former. A change of name, some new buildings and 'Comprehensive' became the norm.

Education Is a privilege

Trying to open the debate on the value of education and the way it is perceived. Is education as much of a privilege as freedom? Is it part of it? Why is education taken for granted by so many people?
Over ten years ago, I worked in a private school in Nairobi, Kenya. People who haven't had a chance to travel often have a skewed vision of Africa. I had certain expectations when I got there but I soon realized that I had been misled by things I had seen on TV about all the different aspects of that amazing continent. In any case, the one thing I can say about my experience there, it that I met the most interesting, most motivated and mature students of my entire carrier. These children, from a very young age, were simply grateful for their education.
A few years ago, I met another teacher who had taught on the other side of Africa, in Ghana, but not in a private school like me, but in a little village school lost in the bush somewhere. One might find this strange but she, also, met the most interesting, most motivated and mature children there.
These children, both the ones I met in Kenya and the ones she met in Ghana could hardly have been any more different. Most of my students' future was pretty much traced already, with their parents' business to take over, no doubt of a college education and a promised life of comfort. My friend's Ghanaian students had none of that but loved school and would have done anything to be there.
In a conversation with a very good Ghanaian friend of mine more recently, we both agreed that in both cases, and in Africa in general, people see education as a privilege, so they make the most of it. She, too, grew up in Africa and came from a better off family than the average African, but she never took education for granted. Over there, and in many other countries in the world, it is never a guarantee, when a child is born, that he/she will be going to school. So when you do, you appreciate it.
It is true that the image that we tend to have of Africa is the less developed side of the continent. We see the way people live in the mud huts and overcrowded vehicles and wild animals surrounding villages in the middle of nowhere. We see also kids living in the streets of big cities having to resort to anything they can to survive. These kids would give anything to go to school. But what are the chances?
I read an article a couple of days ago about two afghan sisters who were walking to school one day and got attacked by men who threw acid at them. They were teenagers, going to school. The men didn't want women to have an education. These girls are more determined than ever to go to school.
Not so long ago in the United States of America, some people were not given the same access to the same education because of the color of their skin. Up until fairly recently, women also didn't receive the same level of education in many countries.
There are still many nations with totalitarian regimes who do not allow certain books, information and facts to be taught because of their political, religious or social beliefs.
In this country, some parents have to force their kids to go to school. Kids run away, pretend to go to school when they get dropped off and disappear for the day. You hear teenagers tell you that school is boring. A good friend of mine often used to say: "Only boring people get bored"...
In this country, education is served to you on a plate. Of course, there is always room for constructive criticism and improvement. You can always say that it is not as good as it should/could be. But it's there! Kids don't have to get up in the middle of the night and walk two hours there and back to go to school. Access is given to all sorts of books, movies, scriptures and debates. Philosophers are studied, even if sometimes they question and disturb. Knowledge is passed on, on a daily basis, it is there for you to receive if you want it.
The United States remains a symbol of Freedom. Many countries in the Western World can pride themselves with Freedom. You hear people in the US claiming their right to Freedom. "This is a free country! I can do this!" Freedom is a privilege, everybody knows that and everybody likes to remind others of it and proudly claims the fact that they belong to a country where Freedom is the basis of life.
Education is the same. It is just as much of a privilege as Freedom. In fact, it is part of it. And yet so many people, especially the ones receiving it, don't seem to see the value of it. Nobody questions the fact that Freedom is there and is a given. It SHOULD be there. And yet, education is the same. It is there for everybody. The fact that it is given to you doesn't make it any less valuable. Freedom is given to you too. It came at a price though. So did education. It wasn't always like that.
Education IS a privilege. Just as Freedom is. Education is what keeps people free. Education is what allows people to think and question and criticize and improve the world. You might think that changes are needed in education now, and I agree with you. There is always room for improvement, so there will always be a need to look at ways to do things better. There are different ways to be educated and sometimes, what you need doesn't come from High School the way it is now. But whatever form of education you get is useful, if you are prepared to receive it.
